The Lantern Festival in China is part of the New Year festivities. It is held on the fifteenth day of the New Year, on the lunar calendar – i.e. the first full moon of the new year.
The city government of Suzhou – not very far from Shanghai – has just announced this year’s Lantern Festival will be cancelled, due to the tragic deaths in Shanghai over the Gregorian calender’s New Year celebrations.
